上海康德双语实验学校:鼓励启发式教育
At the age when children are still innocent and do not know the way forward, how can we select the most suitable school for them? What are the characteristics of bilingual schools? How can parents and schools help children grow? We have invited the mother of Gordon, a Grade 8 student at the middle school, to share with us.

The original intention of education
在Gordon四年级的时候,我们就想为他选择一所双语学校。当时我们参加了许多学校的宣讲会,包括沪上一些十分知名的学校。最终,我们被康德双语先进的教育理念和完善的课程体系所吸引。不仅如此,最打动我的,是当时和潘文光校长的交流。
为人父母,在孩子的成长和教育问题上不免有各种焦虑和担心。当时我向潘校长倾诉了自己内心的忐忑和疑虑时,潘校长语重心长地对我说了一句话,“你放心吧!康德的孩子就是我们老师自己的孩子。” 当时是一个十分寒冷的腊月天,潘校长的这句话如同一股暖流涌进我的心。从潘校长身上,我感受到的是坚定、负责以及对教育的初心。于是,我们当下就决定选择康德双语。如今看来,这是最适合的选择,也是最好的选择。
When Gordon was in Grade 4, we wanted to choose a bilingual school for him. At that time, we attended many school presentations, including some well-known schools in Shanghai. In the end, we were attracted by SCBS's advanced educational philosophy and comprehensive curriculum system. What moved me the most was the communication I had with Principal Pan at the time. As parents, we inevitably have various anxieties and worries about our children's growth and education. When I expressed my inner anxiety to Principal Pan, she solemnly said to me, 'Don't worry! We regard children in SCBS as our own children.' It was a very cold winter day, and Principal Pan's words were like a warm current flowing into my heart. From Principal Pan, I felt determination, responsibility, and the original intention of education. So we decided to choose SCBS at that moment. Now it seems to be the most suitable and best choice.

Personalized Teaching
根据每个学生不同的学习状况,学校采用分层教学,实行“一生一课表”。Gordon从小喜欢数学,加入康德双语后,他的个人天赋得到了充分的施展。除了在2022年上海市中学生数学探究性论文评比中斩获一等奖,他还参加了美国AMC10和AMC12,英国British Mathematical Olympiad等多项国际数学竞赛并获得佳绩。学校的“个性化教学”允许他免修数学,给他充足的自由时间参与高中数学学习或是自习,利用优质资源去学习更高阶的知识。
In terms of the different learning situations of each student, the school adopts hierarchical teaching. Gordon has loved mathematics since he was young. After joining SCBS, his personal talents were fully utilized. In addition to winning the first prize in the 2022 Shanghai High School Student Mathematical Exploration Paper Competition, he also achieved excellent results in many international mathematical competitions such as AMC10, AMC12 in the United States, and the British Mathematical Olympiad. The school's 'personalized teaching' allows him to be exempt from studying mathematics, giving him enough free time to participate in high school mathematics learning or self-study, and use high-quality resources to learn more advanced knowledge.
康德双语的老师们会根据学生学习基础和学习程度的差异,给予选择性作业和辅导。同学们可以选择去挑战完成更有难度的作业,也可以选择把课内知识掌握好,对不同学生采取不同的教学方式。
SCBS's bilingual teachers will provide selective assignments and tutoring based on differences in students' learning foundations and levels. Students can choose to challenge themselves with more difficult assignments. Different teaching methods will be adopted for different students.
“独学而无友,则孤陋而寡闻。”为了提升同学们的学习效果,学校开设了“数学学会”,让初、高中所有对数学感兴趣的同学们都可以在这里一起探讨、交流,感受数学学习的乐趣。与志同道合的同学们一起交流学习,这样的喜悦感和幸福感是无法用成绩、分数来比拟的。数学老师出身的学术副校长Mr. James Stubbert以及学校邀请的国外数学专家常常会给予Gordon很多指导、启示以及帮助和支持,这让Gordon受益匪浅。老师们的一些点播能让Gordon瞬间茅塞顿开,惊叹不已。这也让Gordon更加热爱数学学习。
In order to improve our students' learning effectiveness, the school has participated in the "Maths Society" where all middle and high school students who are interested in maths can explore and communicate together. Academic Vice Principal Mr. James Stubbert, who used to be a maths teacher, as well as foreign maths experts invited by the school, often provide Gordon with guidance, inspiration and support, which greatly benefits him. This has also made Gordon more passionate about learning mathematics.

Gordon是六年级时入读康德双语的,相较于从小学甚至幼儿园就在双语环境下学习的孩子来说,Gordon的英语口语较为薄弱。在入学四个月左右的时候,老师建议他报名参加ESDP英语演讲和辩论竞赛,当时我们觉得这是一个遥不可及的目标。然而老师一直鼓励我们勇于尝试,告诉我们名次并不重要,重要的是这个过程中孩子的成长与收获,学校也会给予孩子辅导和帮助。看到老师的真诚与对Gordon的信任,我们也抱着试一试的心情参加了比赛。最终,Gordon在ESDP上海市初中组的英语演讲和辩论两项竞赛中都得到一等奖的佳绩!这大大增加了Gordon在英语学习上的信心。
Gordon enrolled in SCBS in Grade 6. Compared to children who have been learning in a bilingual environment since primary school or even kindergarten, Gordon's English speaking skills were weaker. After about four months of enrollment, the teacher suggested that he participate in the ESDP English Speech and Debate Competition. At the time, we thought this was an unattainable goal. However, the teacher encouraged us to be brave and try, telling us that the ranking was not important, and that the important thing was the child's development in the process. Seeing the teacher's sincerity and trust in Gordon, we participated in the competition with a mindset of trying. In the end, Gordon achieved first place in both the English speech and debate competitions for the middle school division! This greatly increased Gordon's confidence in learning English.
我曾旁听过康德双语的英语阅读课。和其他学校不同,老师会严谨地为学生们挑选适合的读物,辅导同学们如何阅读,带领同学们一起阅读,阅读中有一些不常见的高级别的单词,老师会用简单的语言解释,帮助学生记忆和理解。与许多学校只是完成教学进度不同,康德双语注重启发式教学,引导孩子学会学习。所谓“授之以鱼不如授之以渔”,康德的教学正是如此。
I once attended an English reading class. Unlike other schools, the teacher rigorously selects suitable reading materials for the students, guides them on how to read, leads them in reading together, and explains some uncommon advanced words in simple language to help students remember and understand them. Unlike many schools that focus only on completing the curriculum, SCBS emphasizes inquiry-based teaching and guides children to learn how to learn. As the saying goes, 'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime,' and that is exactly what SCBS's teaching is about.
Gordon有每天背单词的习惯,在坚持背单词的第1000天,Gordon收到了学术副校长Mr. James Stubbert的邮件,向他表示祝贺与鼓励,这让孩子十分感动。没想到校长会在百忙之中记得一个学生如此细微的小事。这也让Gordon直到如今依然保持着每天背英语单词的习惯,不辜负校长的期望。作为一个偏重理科的孩子,学校能够激发起他的英语学习的兴趣,让他愿意去学、喜欢去学,这离不开学校给予的支持、鼓励、包容,激发孩子的潜能与进取心,让他们更有勇气去尝试,不断突破自己。
Gordon has a habit of memorizing vocabulary words every day. On his 1000th consecutive day of doing so, he received an email from the Academic Vice Principal, Mr. James Stubbert, congratulating and encouraging him, which deeply touched him. He never expected the principal to remember such a small detail about a student. This experience has motivated Gordon to continue his daily English vocabulary practice, in order to meet the expectations of the principal. As a student who leans towards the sciences, the school was able to ignite his interest in learning English and made him willing to do so. This would not have been possible without the school's support, encouragement, and inclusivity, which helped to unlock the students' potential and drive, enabling them to have the courage to constantly challenge themselves and reach new heights.

A School that Reassured Parents
“康德的全人教育让孩子懂得学习是终生的事,希望孩子在热爱和兴趣中拥有幸福感。幸福不仅来自于考试的好成绩,而是孩子内心的求知欲。” 执行校长Dr. Oliver Kramer曾说过这么一句话,让我印象深刻。康德双语不以成绩作为评价学生的唯一标准,而是因势利导,更多关注学生的个性、特长、天赋与情感需求,让孩子们学会学习,享受学习,能够用更开放的思维去面对问题。
'SCBS's holistic education teaches children that learning is a lifelong pursuit, and hopes that children can experience happiness through their passions and interests. Happiness does not only come from good grades in exams, but from a child's inner curiosity.' Dr. Oliver Kramer, the executive principal, once said this sentence, which left a deep impression on me. SCBS does not solely evaluate students based on their grades, but instead guides them based on their individuality, strengths, talents, and emotional needs. This approach enables children to learn how to learn, to enjoy learning, and to approach problems with a more open mind.
康德双语的老师把学生当作自己的孩子。老师的大门随时向孩子敞开着,有问题随时可以去找老师。有些老师甚至牺牲了中午吃饭的时间以及下班时间来帮助他们解决问题。老师们精心、负责地安排教学任务、布置作业、安排考试、以及完成每个学期的评语评定。同时,在学校提供多种竞赛机会中,康德的学生都取得了非常傲人的成绩,这与老师们提供的辅导和帮助密切相关。
Teachers of SCBS treat their students as their own children. The teachers' doors are always open to the children, and they can always go to the teachers with questions. Some teachers even sacrifice their lunch breaks and after-work hours to help the students solve problems. The teachers carefully and responsibly arrange teaching tasks, assign homework, arrange exams, and complete evaluations for each semester. At the same time, Kant's students have achieved very impressive results in various competitions provided by the school, which is closely related to the coaching and assistance provided by the teachers.
老师和学生彼此信任、彼此尊重,这让Gordon非常喜欢在康德双语的学习氛围。这里没有过度竞争和内卷带来的焦虑,能帮助孩子们找到内心真正热爱的事情。融洽的师生关系、紧密的家校合作,作为家长,把孩子交给康德双语我很放心,学校的老师们为家长担负了孩子学业的重任,而把轻省留给了家长,让我们可以有更多时间去做自己的事。
The trust and respect between teachers and students at SCBS is what Gordon loves most about the learning environment. There is no excessive competition or anxiety caused by academic pressure, which helps children find what they truly love. The harmonious relationship between teachers and students, as well as the close cooperation between parents and the school, make me as a parent feel at ease to entrust my child to SCBS. The teachers at the school bear the heavy responsibility of the child's education, while leaving the lighter burden to the parents, allowing us to have more time to do our own things.

从八年级开始,康德双语就开始开展“大学升学家长工作坊”,早计划、早规划、早安排。学校会充分和学生及家长沟通大学的方向和升学规划。每年,康德双语都会与全球多所知名大学保持交流,确保孩子们能获得最新、最及时的大学申请信息。例如,今年四月,学校还邀请到剑桥大学招生官,亲自来到学校和学生们进行面对面的讲座交流。
Starting from Grade 8, SCBS has been conducting 'College Admissions Parent Workshops'. The school will communicate with students and parents about the direction of college and admission planning. Every year, SCBS maintains communication with numerous well-known universities worldwide to ensure that students can obtain the latest and most timely college application information. For example, this April, the school invited the Cambridge University admissions officers to come to the school and have face-to-face lectures with students.
Gordon对我说,未来想当一名科学家,希望以后自己能够学有所成,为国家尽一份力,为社会做一些贡献。听到这些话我十分感动。那一刻,我真的觉得Gordon长大了,这是康德双语赋予他的信念,也是学校的教育理念,即培养“身心健康、德才兼备”的康德学子,同时也是具备国家意识、本土情怀和国际视野的、适应未来社会发展需要的栋梁之才。这让我们家长觉得十分欣慰。康德双语既能够让孩子在多元文化里放眼看世界,也能让孩子在心里永葆一颗中国心,将来为国家、为社会做贡献。这才是我们的教育真正需要培养的人才。
Gordon told me that he wants to become a scientist in the future, hoping to make contributions to the country and society. I was deeply moved by these words. At that moment, I felt that Gordon had grown up. This is the belief instilled in him by SCBS's education philosophy, which aims to nurture students who not only have a regional, cultural and national identity with an international perspective but also enjoy good physical and mental health, curiosity and creativity. It is the school's goal to imbue the students with this ethos so that they will become the backbone of our future society.
SCBS not only allows children to see the world in a multicultural context but also helps them maintain a sense of Chinese identity in their hearts, so that they can make contributions to the country and society in the future. This is the kind of talent that our education system truly needs to cultivate.
