History is not a study of others, but help us understand how events in the past made things the way they are today. At SUIS JKEMW, our students never come away thinking history class is boring or irrelevant as we adapted many non-traditional teaching methods to help our students enjoy learning history and develop the skill of historical thinking. We are delighted to include the interview with our history teacher, Mr. Patrick Duhamel.

Last year I decided I needed a change of schools and I interviewed at many schools around Shanghai. When I toured the school with Mr. Flowers, I was surprised at how many teachers were so happy and willing to great me. I was also really impressed by how many students were leading presentations that they worked really hard on. This led me to joining the SUIS JKEMW staff.
我算是这个课程部的新成员,当我和副校长Mr. Flower一起参观学校时,所有的老师都很友善,也十分的欢迎我,我也对许多学生的演讲能力留下了深刻印象。友爱温暖的工作氛围和能力出众的学生促使我加入了协和教科融合课程部这个大家庭。

2What is your greatest professional accomplishment?

Previously I was at a school in the Songjiang District. I have two moments stand out the most. One moment was in 2017 when I took over the AS and A2 level history course and watched those students graduate. The other big moment I think of is last year when one of the students I taught in history got the top score in China for the Cambridge history exam.
之前我任职于上海的另一所国际学校,在2017年我接手了AS 和A2水平的世界历史学科,我也很欣慰的看到他们以优异的成绩成功毕业。去年我的一位学生在剑桥的历史考试中荣获了中国的最高分。

3What subject do you teach and how do you usually teach in class?

Though I have taught G1 Geography before and enjoyed it I have always mainly taught history. In my classes I like to make sure we have routines so students know what to do at the start of class and what is expected of them. This year, I am teaching a lot of subjects in history that are new to me and I think I could’ve been a bit better about having more student projects but I look forward to having many more student projects and presentations in the second half of the year.
我主要专攻世界历史学科,在我的课堂上,我会确保我的学生明确知道课堂开始时该做什么和每节课的教学目标。这学期我们的历史学科尝试了很多新的领域,在下半学年的教学中,我会引进更多由学生主导的项目和演讲,更好的丰富我们的历史日常教学。

4How do you usually design your course?

When I was designing my courses,I was lucky to have had some materials from previous teachers to help get me started before expanding on the projects and assignments as the years went on. This year has been no different as Mr. Spettel has been very helpful in sharing his resources as has Mr. Vieira. When I start to map-out a scheme of work I often like to start by saying “what questions do my students need to be able to answer?” and then adapt my unit plans accordingly.
在设计我的课程时,我很幸运地从以前的老师那里得到了一些辅助教学材料,帮助我可以快速识别学生的能力程度和教学进度。Mr. Spettel和Mr. Vieira都非常乐于分享他们的资源。当我开始制定工作计划时,我经常喜欢先思考 "我的学生需要能够回答什么问题?"然后再相应地调整我的单元计划。

5Any creative or valuable teaching method you want to share?

One technique I like using is the “reverse jigsaw.” In this technique students are broken up into groups to discuss a smaller part of a topic. Then after they have discussed they can either choose one member to present their findings to the class or the groups can be shuffled so each group has one member who will present to the other students while the other students record what they are saying before switching roles.
"反向拼图"是我一直喜欢用的一种教学技巧。在这种教学方法中,学生们被分成几个小组,分别讨论一个话题的其中一部分。讨论结束后,他们可以选择一个代表向全班介绍他们的发现,或者将所有人员重组,让每个小组都有一个成员向其他学生介绍他的发现,其他学生则记录他们的发言。

6Any interesting stories happen in school that you can share?

So far I think one of the more fun times I had came just a few weeks back when the students of the Flag Football ECA constructed a tag game using the flags. We played half the football field and it was a cold day and everybody thought it’d be fun to make me it. That day I found out just how much faster a lot of the students here are. I was pretty out of breath all the way into my next ECA at the end of the day.
除了历史,我也热爱运动,我和学生们在我的夺旗橄榄球ECA课程上有很多有趣的瞬间。几个星期前,学生们用旗帜构建了一个标签游戏,我们在半个足球场肆意的狂奔,所有人都很享受其中。一场比赛下来我气喘吁吁,那天我惊讶的发现原来他们的跑步速度这么快,所有人都富于激情.
