A Midsummer Nights Dream Performance
《仲夏夜之梦》浪漫上演

On Saturday 8th January G8-12 Drama Elective performed William Shakespoeares “A Midsummer Nights Dream” at BASIS International School Guangzhou.

由八至十二年级的戏剧选修课同学精心准备的戏剧表演《仲夏夜之梦》于1月8日在广州贝赛思国际学校浪漫上演。

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare c. 1595 or 1596. The play is set in Athens, and consists of several subplots that revolve around the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. One subplot involves a conflict among four Athenian lovers. Another follows a group of six amateur actors rehearsing the play which they are to perform before the wedding. Both groups find themselves in a forest inhabited by fairies who manipulate the humans and are engaged in their own domestic intrigue. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular and is widely performed.

《仲夏夜之梦》在1595年至1596年间完成,是莎士比亚最受欢迎的浪漫喜剧,在世界各地广泛演出。剧目以雅典为背景,围绕着雅典大公爵忒修斯和希波吕忒的婚礼开展,当中穿插了不同的故事线,既有四名雅典恋人的矛盾纠葛,也有六名业余演员在婚礼前的表演彩排。他们不约而同地来到了森林,殊不知森林里的妖精正默默地操控着他们,森林里的仙王、仙后也闹起了矛盾。

The event was a promednade experience. This meant that the different scenes were performed around different locations of the school and the audience went on a journey around the grounds and watched the unfolding scenes in various locations. 

此次,戏剧选修课的学生给观众们带来了与众不同的观演体验,大家可以根据故事的线索到不同的场地欣赏精彩的戏剧场景,体验身临其境的震撼。

There were two casts. Cast 1 performed at 11:30 am and Cast 2 performed at 3:45 pm. Each cast had a healthy audience turnout and performed with dedication, energy and skill!

我们为观众提供了上午11:30和下午3:45两场演出,由两组学生演员分别完成。每一组学生都展现了出色的戏剧表演技巧和深厚的感染力,赢得了大家的好评。

On the 2nd December, High School took a trip to Chimelong Safari Park. 

近日,我校高中部的师生前往广州长隆野生动物园进行了一场有趣的冬季郊游。

The day was about bonding as a team with the student’s teacher advisors, but Mr Phil Dust, SET for Natural Sciences, also devised a scavenger hunt competition, complete with website, to ensure the day was full of challenges, learning, and camaraderie.

组织郊游,目的是让师生走出课室,暂时放下工作和学业,亲近大自然,陶冶情操,更重要的是增进师生、学生之间的感情,提升团队凝聚力。科学老师Phil Dust先生也设计了一个在线寻宝游戏,也给当天的郊游平添了许多挑战和回忆。

Students were required to work as a team with their advisor to complete a series of challenges, including acting, dancing, problem solving, video making and of course, learning about animals from all over the world and how they are preserved and cared for at Chimleong.

学生们被要求与导师合作共同完成一系列挑战,包括表演、舞蹈、解密、视频制作等。当然,还需要了解来自世界各地的动物以及长隆动物园对它们的保护和照顾。

All students and teachers hailed the day as a fantastic team building exercise, full of unique and interesting challenges, as well as a great learning experience. Judges from the BASIS International School Guangzhou administration team have worked hard assessing student’s entries, and winners will be announced soon at a special prize giving and award ceremony.

此次郊游团建活动不但有趣,而且充满挑战,让参加的高中部师生称赞不已,同时也让大家有了一次很棒的学习体验。来自学校行政管理团队的评委们也会认真细致地评估学生的参赛作品,获奖者名单将在一个特别的颁奖活动上公布。

Making Your Own Dango in School

在学校自己制作团子

Dango is a traditional Japanese dessert. It was developed as early as the Jōmon period (c. 14,000–300 BCE) and from only five original types. Dango today has branched into more than ten varieties. You can find this national food everywhere in Japan – from festivals, TV dramas, to even anime. At the Kamen Rider Japanese Club, students experienced the process of making Dango at school and tasting the Dango they made themselves.

团子是一种日式传统点心,早在绳文时代 (c. 14,000–300 BCE) 就已经开始食用。从过去的五个种类,发展到今天已有十个以上的种类繁多的团子。不管是在电视剧还是在日常节日中都能看见团子的身影,是当之无愧的日本国民食物。在假面骑士日语俱乐部,学生们能在学校里体验制作团子的过程,品尝自己亲手制作的团子。

The making of Dango is not very complicated. You use a large bowl of glutinous rice flour and water and mix it to form a paste, then you divide it into smaller balls and add various flavors -- somewhat similar to the making of “Tangyuan”, a traditional food in China. 

制作团子的过程实际上并没有那么复杂,只需要一个大碗,装上糯米粉与水,揉成面团后分成一个一个小球,再根据口味加上各种各样的味道就好了,跟做汤圆有点像。

“Through this event, we wanted to introduce the traditional (food) culture of Japan, promote cultural interaction, and improve the popularity of our school’s Japanese club. In addition, by setting this activity before Christmas, the event also added to the Christmas cheer.” Said Hedwig, the President of Kamen Rider Japanese Club, explaining why they organized this activity, "Before this activity, our members went through the whole process in the weekend, but just before the event began, there was still a lot of uncertainty about what might go wrong. 

“我们想通过团子,带大家一起了解日本的传统食物文化,促进交流,并提高我校日语社的知名度。而且此活动在圣诞节前夕,也可以让大家在学业告一段落之前放松放松。”假面骑士日语俱乐部的社长Hedwig Tang说。为了成功地举办此次活动,她与社员们早在周末就把整个流程过了一遍。但在活动开始之前,还是有很多不确定性,怕会出什么乱子。

Fortunately, the activity went well and everyone helped each other. In the end, everyone made many different kinds of Dango, like Hanami, Mitarashi, and soy sauce. Among them, the rich and warm soy sauce paste was widely praised."

“幸好,此次活动展开得很顺利,大家不管是社员还是学生都互相帮助。最终大家都制作出了各式各样的团子,像花见,御守洗,酱油团子等。尤其是香醇温暖的酱油膏受到了广泛好评。”

Since it is rare to have authentic Japanese Dango in China, this event allowed students to experience traditional Japanese desserts while learning cooking and Japanese food culture. The DIY process gave students a chance to make their own Dango, but also because this is their first attempt, there were many unexpected situations: some Dangos were too big, so there was less soy sauce flavor; some Dangos added too little matcha powder; and some Dangos were too small.

因为在中国很少能吃到正宗的日本团子,这次的活动让同学们品尝到了正宗的日本点心同时也学习了有关于烹饪及日食文化的知识。这一次DIY的过程给了学生们很多自由发挥的空间,但同时也因为这是第一次尝试,出现了众多“意外状况”:有些团子搓得太大,吃到后来早已没有了酱油味;有些团子加得抹茶粉又太少,煮出来的绿色淡淡的;还有的团子太小了。

But the freedom and uncertainty are what make DIY fun. Compared to purchasing semi-finished products and cooking them directly, there is much more satisfaction in doing it by hand. In making Dangos together, the students can also make friends with their new classmates, chat with others, and eat the Dango made by themselves, adding to the fun of a heavy Wednesday evening.

但正是这种高自由度与不确定性,才是DIY的乐趣所在。比起购买半成品直接煮,这样亲自动手所带来的满足感反而让人印象深刻。在分组制作团子的过程中,学生们也与本身不熟悉的同学们打成了一片,大家其乐融融地聊着天吃着团子,为学业繁重的周三傍晚增添了乐趣。

Did you learn any myths or fairytales in your childhood? From the Monkey King to Prometheus and the Theft of Fire, these stories bring children a lot of fun and help them understand the world.

童年时期的你有没有听过各种神话故事呢?那些关于美猴王出世或是普罗米修斯盗火的故事相比大家小时候就略有所闻吧。这些有趣的故事永远都能带给孩子们欢乐,但同时,它们也可以帮助孩子们了解这个世界。

World Mythologies is a capstone course for seniors, which discusses gods and myths, and take a different look at history. Instead of simply memorizing facts and studying different stories, students learn where the myths originated and how different cultures perceive the world-building in these myths. Sounds pretty intriguing, right?

世界神话课是一门开设给12年级学生的顶点课程。这门课程主要围绕各种神与神话展开,以一种不同的角度来看待历史。与其他单单学习各种历史知识和故事的课相比,这门课更注重这些神话的来源,以及这些神话是如何促成一个文化的世界观的。这听起来是不是很有趣呢?

But how can these stories be connected to and influence real life? To find the answer to this question, students were divided into groups, and each group chose a different monster from a different culture around the world. 

可是这些神话又是如何联系起来并且影响现实世界的呢?为了找到这个问题的答案,学生们分成了不同的小组,每个小组选择了来自世界不同角落,不同文化的神话人物进行研究。

What they had to do was first to research what it was, where it came from, what cultures were responsible for its creation, and then what inspired the formation of this myth or legend. Then, students presented these ideas for their mythology topic. They talked about the impact of mythologies on games, such as God of War and Assassins Creed. They also talked about how those different characters are represented in these games. 

首先,学生们要搜索一些关于那个角色的基本信息。比如,它具体是个怎样的生物,它从哪里来,哪个文化塑造了这个角色,以及这个生物是为什么被创造出来的。之后,学生们通过搜集的资料展示了他们自己对于角色的见解。他们还提及了这些古代神话是如何影响 一些现在的游戏,(比如“战神” 和 “刺客信条”)还有那些怪兽本身又是以什么样的方式在游戏里出现的。

“For example, there is a monster called the Kraken. It even appeared in the Pirates of Caribbean: a giant underwater squid monster. It is actually inspired by the real giant squid. Many monster stories actually come from rational or tangible thing, and the stories about them change over time.” said Mr. Jones, the teacher of the Mythology class.

“比如,加勒比海盗里面有一个叫克拉肯的怪兽,他是一个生活在水里,长得很像乌贼的大怪兽。它的原型就是一个巨型乌贼。其实很多神话故事都是从一些切切实实的东西衍生出来的,只不过它们的形象会随时间推移而变化。” 在介绍神话与现实世界的联系时,神话课老师Mr. Jones说道。“各种各样的参考资料表明,有些神话中的东西是存在在现实世界里的。而另一些则是凭空而起,可是人们总是在谈论这些神话。”

“My favorite mythology is Norse Viking mythology. Many people know this mythology from the marvel movies, like the Thor character.” In Norse mythology, the characters are not necessarily powerful; they are very much like everyday people with a special power.

“我最喜欢的是北欧海盗的神话。很多人都是通过漫威的电影了解这些神话的,比如雷神托尔。” Mr. Jones也谈了他最喜欢的神话。北欧神话里的角色往往并不需要是强大的,他们只是一些拥有特殊能力的正常人而已。

“Mythology is a storytelling. It’s like people’s cultural DNA. What I mean by that is that people study myths to understand how people in the past view their world and make sense of their world. Before science came, mythology answered a lot of questions that people had about where they come from, and why the world worked the way it did. By looking at the stories, you understand how people were thinking, and how people were trying to rationalize the world around them.” 

“神话是一种讲故事的方式,它们相当于人类文化的一段DNA。人们研究神话以去理解以前的人是怎样看,怎样理解这个世界的。在人们对科学并不是那么了解的时候,神话故事解释了很多当时的人们无法解释的事,比如我们从哪里来,又比如世界为什么是这样运转的。总而言之,人们会讲述各种关于这个世界的故事。而通过这些神话故事,我们可以更好地理解以前的人们是如何思考以及将他们周围的世界合理化的。”

By enjoying these fantastic stories that assemble the imagination of our ancestors, students have a deeper understanding - not only of the past, but of humanity.

This year, a course of Chinese Culture Studies and Exchange is open to our 12th graders, enabling them to start an inquisitive journey into Chinese tea, cuisines, traditional clothing and architecture. From tea making and tasting techniques to the mindset of Zen, from the styles of Eight Great Cuisines to the development of traditional clothing for commoners and nobles, and from architectural craft to the patriarchy system and rituals, we help our students perceive the charm of Chinese culture and long to learn more. 

本学年,12年级开设了中国文化研习与跨文化交际这门课,在中国文化研习部分,同学们分模块学习并体验了丰富多彩的中国文化项目,进行了包括中国茶文化、饮食文化、传统服饰、传统建筑等多个专题的学习。每个专题都是一次旅程,开启的是同学们对一种中国传统文化的向往。在辨识茶叶、沏茶与品茶中领略茶禅一味的境界;在八大菜系的酸甜咸香辣中体验烹饪的乐趣和美食的愉悦;在帝王将相到平民百姓服装颜色与材质的变迁中探寻服饰发展的脉络;在传统建筑的庄严古朴中了解中国宗法礼制与匠人智慧。

Module One: Chinese Tea

专题一:中国茶文化

This module started with a history of tea and the types of tea with a focus on white tea, yellow tea, green tea, black tea, dark tea and oolong tea. Students were shown the colors, shapes, tastes, fermentation, functions and production of tea, and learned how to use the tea wares by actually making and tasting the tea. Their fruitful module was ended with a Tea Culture Contest.

课堂上,我们首先介绍了茶叶的历史和种类,然后带领同学们重点认识了白茶、黄茶、绿茶、红茶、黑茶和乌龙茶六种茶叶的色、形、味、发酵程度、主要功用及制作过程,并认识了常见的茶具,进行了泡茶、品茶的实践活动。最后,我们用一场茶文化知识大赛结束了这次愉快而充满收获的茶文化之旅。

Module Two: Chinese Cuisines

After an introduction to the history and development of the Eight Great Cuisines of China, our students were divided into five groups, and each group was asked to present the features of a Great Cuisine and make a dish.  Cuisines of Szechuan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Cantonese were selected. From presentations and cooking, students understood food as a reflection of climate, resources, social mores, life styles and history.

中国饮食文化这个部分,我们首先介绍了中国八大菜系的历史及形成过程。根据班级已有的5个小组,同学们分别选择了川菜、湘菜、苏菜、浙菜、粤菜来进行菜系特点介绍和菜品制作活动。在讲解和制作的过程中,同学们充分认识到饮食文化之所以是中国文化的重要组成部分,是因为其与不同地区的气候风貌、物产资源、民俗风情以及人们的生活态度,甚至地区的历史文化交流都有着密切的关系。
