“I encourage questions and creativity,” notes one teacher。
“I’m surprised to find that I am quite good at organizing events and communicating with different people,” another faculty member reflects。
“I learned so much about Shanghai’s multicultural history,” says a third, all of them having answered the question of one thing they had learned about themselves。
Building Shanghai, a week-long, immersive learning experience transformed SHBS into thirteen project groups that explored our bustling metropolis, learning about subjects that ranged from banking and finance to local culinary traditions, from environmental conservation to tourism and hospitality。
Gone were physics textbooks。 TOEFL lessons disappeared; and arts classes vanished, too。 Instead, those subjects were everywhere, a part of everything: architecture, data analysis, field reports, meetings with executives, recycling programs, manufacturing plants, business models。
Knowledge went from the theoretical to the real, and became a series of tools for understanding how Shanghai, this amazing city we call home, went from small trading city to cosmopolitan global hub in less than fifty years。
“I learned how important it is to really use English,” one student remarked。 “I was impressed by how much attitude mattered more than anything for success,” a classmate observed。 “I had to think about the questions to ask, not simply look for answers,” reflected a third。
Education most often reflects routines—bells rung, curriculum developed, tests taken—and usually does so to the great comfort of students navigating their tumultuous adolescence, as conservative as they may be rebellious。 Goals can be met, grades received, errors corrected, praise given, progress made。 Yet schools also strive to nurture innovation, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills。 Catch phrases like STEAM and PBL often stand in for a slight variation on what has always been done。
Instead, Building Shanghai sought to discover the limits of possibility, just as our namesake city defied any previous model of development, any known template of economic transformation。 What if we imagined a blank slate, a week without walls or schedules, subjects drawn from the world and not abstract disciplines?
Faculty became students, and all of us teachers。 We tested our patience, and essayed our communication skills。 We took on unfamiliar roles, and became role models beyond the security of our well-known subjects: how to observe something new, strategies for overcoming unexpected obstacles, the joy of exploration and meandering intellectual curiosity。
We took hundreds of subway rides, walked thousands of kilometers, visited dozens of locations, spoke with experts from around the world, and discovered a great deal about ourselves and one another。 Frustration taught as much as accomplishments; we learned the importance of listening, the challenges of shared work。
SHBS also celebrated our city as a center of arts and as an expression of limitless creativity, with the entire week epitomized by the engaging, interactive performance of world-renowned pianist Kong Xiangdong。 A Shanghai native, Mr。 Kong embodies the very transformation we sought to understand: he shared stories of practicing on a cardboard keyboard, unable to afford a real one—and practicing in a heatless room, windows barely blocking the winter wind。 Yet amidst hardship existed the greater power of creativity and determination, of a life that would be dedicated to discovery, to music, to love。 Mr。 Kong performed with brilliance, and shared his mentorship with our own talented student Peter Zhang。 All the while he invited everyone in the audience, with playful wonder, to find their potential in iPad apps, to recognize their own unique power of expression。
Just a few days later, all SHBS students took to that same stage to share what they had discovered during Building Shanghai。 The diversity and creativity were astounding。 Museums had been planned; fashion had been transformed from recycled materials。 Stray cats on campus had been rescued, and wilderness areas surveyed。 Students shared survey results and explained market trends。 We learned about supply chains and real-time adaptations to Covid。 Through videos, interviews, posters, and performances, we became part of what has continued to build Shanghai。
While we’ve since returned to our more regular structures of learning, we’ve also had first-hand experience of what we can create, from scratch。 Our seniors have written updates to their colleges, which contain stories of discoveries and unique perspectives on what inspires their future studies。 Underclassmen have found new potential discoveries for their academic pursuits, and reckoned with the skills they’ll need for success。 We all shared talents that normally remain below the surface, and developed connections beyond our typical routines。
As a school, SHBS seeks to show students what it means to learn, and to facilitate discoveries of purpose for the entire community。 We implore students to take risks and to eschew the fear of failure, yet to truly embolden them, we must do the same。 We extol our values of dignity, honor, respect, and integrity, yet to truly enact them, we must challenge ourselves through practice, and in confrontation with the unknown。
Building Shanghai truly became a project, a word in English that too often remains a noun rather than unleashing its full power as a verb: to venture, to instantiate, to take something small and magnify its potential into the unknown。 That ambition is carried forward by all of us, in ways both small and large。 Our learning is more active, and knows how much more will be possible when we return over and again to the future of Building Shanghai。
