INTEGRATED SCIENCE AT SUISJKEMW
Science is the observation and study of how things work leading to the production of theories that can successfully describe the behavior and predict behavior under certain circumstances. Science also includes the testing of its models/theories by experiment to see if they do accurately describe the way things work in reality. Scientific theories are never proven – they just become more accepted as the experimental evidence to support those increases.
Science at JKEMW is taught as integrated science which contain three traditional disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The science department is housed in two purpose-built laboratories, well-served by technician support and has one separate prep room. Students take part in our annual science fair and SUIS cross campus Science Fair in May every year where they have opportunity to showcase their best projects.

SCIENCE
Our students follow the UK KS3 Curriculum which is integrated with National curriculum in many aspects. We have adopted this particular curriculum because it builds upon the progress of our students at primary school and prepares our students for the demands of their IGCSE courses in Grade 9 which lead to the Cambridge or Edexcel Board examinations in all subjects at the end of Grade 10. Currently the SOW used by the JKEMW Science Department covers different curricula. In Grade 6 and 7 students follow a core of content from the 'Exploring science' scheme and in Grade 8 follow the Coordinated Science 0654. This gives them a superb foundation in the key areas of science, as well as a wide experience of practical skills and investigative approaches.

EXPLORING THE SCIENC
Science, as we know, is the study of the universe. The whole world is created by The Big Bang, since then, three main categories that feature different kinds of science have been surrounding us: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Physics is the inquiry or learning about why things in the universe acts in its own ways. It is the basics of all the other subjects. Chemistry is basically experimental physics .This where we demonstrate our ideas and thoughts according to the scientific steps in order to prove something or discover new chemicals and substances. Biology, on the other hand, is different to chemistry and physics. It is the learning of living organisms, trying to discover its natural surroundings and ways of living.
During my learning and exploration in Biology at school, I have learned to know about the basic structure of cells and the function of each organelle, compared and contrasted the differences between osmosis and diffusion, and also learned about how enzymes work and its features.
I have learned a lot during this one month study of biology-cells at school. My teacher has always been so responsible and patient for my learning. I wish that later on I would learn more challenging and profound knowledge later on during my school career.

Personally speaking, I enjoy science. To me, science really is cool!
I mean, the teachers don't set fire on gummy bears and gases everyday. In science class right now, we are learning about “pressure in fluids”, we covered topics like food and nutrition, which Mr. Hewson set a gummy bear on fire to show us how much energy it released. My favourite experiment is when Mr. Hewson demonstrates combustion (aka burning with oxygen) by burning magnesium and producing magnesium oxide (which is heavier than the magnesium before.

EXPLORING THE SCIENCE
A few months ago, a group of expectant seventh graders stepped into the science lab at SUIS Jiaoke, starting their journey to discover how the world works. We are now halfway through the semester, and in our minds are lots of knowledge and understanding, lots of ideas and inspirations, like burning candles, lighting our way ahead.
I remember the time when our teacher burnt solid potassium chloride in a test tube into liquid and put a gummy bear in it—Suddenly, we seem to hear the sound of a roaring car engine and smoke started jetting out of the test tube. Then the gummy bear glowed orange and then a pale shade of blue… Later, our teacher told us this is similar to how gummy bears release their energy inside of our bodies, and it is happening right this moment inside every one of us! I couldn’t imagine how we don’t seem to be glowing orange or blue, and I couldn’t imagine how sugar is not inflating our cells… I couldn’t help thinking about a world which gas stations will start pumping gummy bears into cars… Can gummy bears be an alternative fuel?
I also remember when our teacher demonstrated the oxidation process of magnesium metal. When a piece of magnesium is set on fire, it burnt so brightly that it blinded my eyes! It is like looking at the sun in summer, only the light is concentrated on my eyes, making it look brighter! After the oxidation process ended, the burning stopped and what is left is some magnesium oxide powder… The sun glows because nuclear fusion is happening inside the sun, producing a lot of harmful radiation, so does burning magnesium work like a nuclear reactor and produce harmful radiation and UV rays? What if this extreme light can be used to generate electricity?
We are now only halfway through the semester, but the experiments and activities has successfully made me love science and inspired me to never give up on discovering the secrets behind the world we live in!

EXPLORING THE SCIENCE
Lately in Science class, my class have been learning all about acids and alkalis.
Last week, we did an experiment testing the strong ness of acids or alkalis in substances such as lemon juice and more by using the universal indicator. First, you need to drip a drop of one of the substances into a little circle of the spotting tile, then add two drops of universal indicator. The substance will turn color, and we would need to record the name of the substance and the color it changed into on a chart. We repeated this process several times, testing all of the substances.
From this experiment, I learnt how to test the strongness of a acid or alkali in a substance. And how you can see which are acidic and which are alkaline. We need to use a pH scale to do that. For example, if the number according to the color is lower than 7, it’s and acid. If the number is higher than 7, it’s a acid. But if it’s exactly 7, it’s pH neutral. However, you can know how strong the acid or alkali is by observing the shade of the color. According to the pH scale, number 1, on the very left of the scale (which is a bright red color), is the strongest acid. On the other hand, number 14, on the very right of the scale (which is a dark purple), is the strongest of the alkali. In conclusion, I think this experiment was interesting and fun to do, it was also a great way to let me understand more about acids and alkalis.
